The UNSC had been attacked by the Covenant many times, always surviving barley. But this time it was different. Two foes become friends, enimies become allies for survival. The covenant was split up, the Elites, Grunts, and Hunters becoming a new alliance, the Separatists with the UNSC to stop the Great Journey.
